Deeper connection during baby massage

If you make a daily ritual of baby massage, a deeper bond with your baby will naturally develop. You can start baby massage from about six weeks and you will soon experience that it is a relaxing time for both parent and child. The skin-to-skin contact gives you very direct attention to your baby and creates a deeper connection. If you speak softly along with them, your baby will get to know you better and better.

Techniques from India

Baby massage is based on the technique discovered by French gynaecologist Dr Leboyer during a trip to India. He saw how mothers cared for their babies and how relaxed the little ones became as a result. He brought the technique of baby massage to Europe and his knowledge is now widespread. Baby massage enhances the well-being of parent and child.

Baby massage with attention and respect

Baby massage is based on Shantala, the philosophy that there is an imbalance after birth, which can be restored through slow and gentle massage techniques. While massaging, you can see from your child whether they find it pleasant. There are not many babies who do not get calm from a baby massage. From attention and respect, everyone calms down.

Release of happiness hormone during baby massage

During a baby massage, the happiness hormone serotonin is released; in the process, the stress hormone cortisol drops. As a result, the heart rate drops and breathing becomes calmer; your baby experiences a physical calm. Combined with a familiar voice and the warmth of hands on the skin, each massage is a familiar contact between parent and child. Your baby will demonstrably cry less, sleep better, experience fewer cramps, have improved bowel movements and generally appear more content.

Tips for a great baby massage

5

Do not give the baby massage immediately after feeding, let the stomach ‘recover’ first, an hour after feeding is ideal.

5

Make sure the room in which you give the baby massage is warm enough. Bathe your baby first, this too promotes relaxation.

5

Use a neutral non-scented oil, do not wear jewellery, keep nails trimmed short and turn off ambient noise.

5

Stop when you see from your child that enough is enough; the experience should always be perceived as pleasant.

Confidence grows through repetition

Babies thrive best with repetition. Baby massage really doesn’t have to be complicated; just the basic techniques will get you a long way. Your baby actually likes it when the same movements come back over and over again. As a result, trust grows and your baby learns to surrender to the touch.
